Madonna was born Madonna Louise Ciccone on August 16, 1958 in Bay City, Michigan. She is the third child in a family of six. Her siblings are named Martin, Anthony, Paula, Christopher, and Melanie. She the a child of French-Canadian Madonna Fortin and Italian-American Silvio Ciccone. Madonna, who is now an enthusiastic follower of Kabbalah religion, was raised as Catholic.

She had become a straight-A student in high school and was a member of the cheering squad. She received a dance scholarship to the University of Michigan after she graduated from high school but left the University after her sophomore year to move to New York City to pursue a dancing career.

Her first break came in 1982 where she signed a deal with Sire Records. She released her first single “Everybody” in April 1982. The song became a success and peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot Dance/Club Chart. Her debut album entitled “Madonna” became number 8 on the U.S. albums chart.

Her sophomore album, “Like A Virgin,” became her first number one album on the U.S. charts. The hits include the now cult classics, “Material Girl” and “Like A Virgin.”

Her 1986 album “True Blue” also boasted several chart-topping hits such as “Papa Don’t Preach,” “Open Your Heart,” “True Blue,” and “La Isla Bonita.”

Madonna had gained a notorious reputation for promoting sex and masturbation on stage and her music videos. Some of her videos were deemed too sexually explicit and inappropriate for TV. Her “Like A Prayer” video, which has a separate music video for Pepsi, had been considered too controversial. It featured a black man arrested for a crime of a white man. And although the music video for Pepsi was not related to the music video, it had been pulled from screens as people would identify the song from the product.

She entered mainstream films in 1985. Her first notable role was in the film “Desperately Seeking Susan.” She had also starred in “A League Of Their Own,” With Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, and Rosie O’Donnell.

In 1996, the film “Evita” was released. She played the role of Eva Peron, Argentina’s political icon. Because she really wanted to star in the movie, Madonna said that she wrote a 10-page letter to Andrew Lloyd Webber on why she is perfect for the role. To her delight, she was cast for the role and even won herself a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. It was also the year when she gave to her first child, Lourdes Maria Ciccone Leon in Los Angeles. The father is her then personal trainer Carlos Leon.

Madonna has had dated several famous personalities. She had married actor Sean Penn in 1985 and divorced in 1989. She also had a highly publicized romance with Warren Beatty while working on the film “Dick Tracy.” They separated in 1990 and Madonna, in an interview with Vanity Fair in 1991, had implied the reason why they separated was because Beatty became unfaithful to her. She also became involved with basketball Dennis Rodman in the mid 1990s.

Madonna married director Guy Ritchie on December 22, 2000 after she gave birth to their son, Rocco John Ritchie on August 11. In October 2006, she flew to Malawi for charity works and filed adoption papers for David Banda Mwale, who was born on September 24, 2005. It had sparked controversy that Madonna had apparently used her celebrity connection and power to adopt the child as the law stated that at least one year of residency is required for parents to be able to adopt. She had refuted the allegations.
